Mariners Replace Head Coach Chris Simpson
BALTIMORE (April 28, 2008) – The Baltimore Mariners, slowed by a 1-6 start in their inaugural AIFA season, have relieved Chris Simpson of his coaching duties. As his replacement, the team has selected Orlando Predators' assistant coach Daniel James.
The Mariners opened their season with a hard-fought 36-27 loss to the defending AIFA-finalist Reading Express, in front of nearly 7,000 fans at the Sovereign Center in Reading. The following week, Baltimore logged its lone victory of the season at Florence, 35-32. But since then, the Mariners have lost five straight games. Over that time, Baltimore has surrendered 49 points or more in four of those five defeats.
The most frustrating loss of all came at Augusta, where the Mariners tasted a bitter 27-26 defeat on Friday, April 4th. The kicking game suffered a total meltdown, accounting for six missed field goals and three missed extra points. The Mariners continued to struggle after that, including recent back-to-back losses to the Erie Riverrats.
“This move should not be viewed as a reflection on Chris Simpson's coaching ability,” said Mariners' owner John Morris. “I know that Chris is an excellent coach, and I expect him to have great future success...hopefully, here in the AIFA.
“Coaching any expansion team is a tremendous challenge. I am satisfied that Chris did everything he could to help the Mariners win.”
James comes to the Mariners from the Cincinnati JungleCats of AF2, where he served as Assistant Head Coach. Prior to that, he was an assistant with Arena Football's Orlando Predators, where he worked with highly-regarded head coach Jay Gruden. James played a key role in the Predators' rise to the ArenaBowl championship game in 2006.
This is James' 10th season in indoor football. Prior to the Predators, he served in assistant coaching capacities with Norfolk (AF2), Columbus (AF2) and Jacksonville (AF2). He began his indoor career in 1998 as Director of Player Personnel for the Florida Bobcats (Arena Football League). James' considerable scouting experience was a significant factor in his selection.
“Daniel James comes to us with exceptional credentials,” said Morris. “The Mariners' organization will benefit greatly from his energy and experience. He has an excellent book on available talent, and that is important for the team's continued growth.”
James is married and has three children. He will join the Mariners Wednesday
